Tanzanian PM urges local manufacturers to capture Southern African market

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Tuesday urged local manufacturers of various goods to capture the expansive market in the 16 member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

“Tanzanian local industries are manufacturing goods that can compete in the SADC market and elsewhere,” Majaliwa told a news conference shortly after he visited the 4th Annual SADC Industrialization and Exhibition Week in the business capital Dar es Salaam.

The 4th SADC Industrialization Week and Exhibition, which was officially opened by President John Magufuli on Monday, is part of activities ahead of the 39th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government planned for Aug. 17 and Aug. 18.

“I have been impressed with the high quality of goods manufactured by large, medium and small industries in Tanzania, including leather goods, food and beverages. These goods have a ready market in the SADC region,” said Majaliwa at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Center, the venue of the exhibitions.

Majaliwa said the 4th SADC Industrialization Week and Exhibition should be used by Tanzanian manufacturers to showcase their products to the SADC market.

He said Tanzanian industrialists should find ways of partnering with their counterparts in the other 15 SADC members states with a view of producing goods for exports.

Majaliwa added that the 4th SADC Industrialization Week and Exhibition should also be used as a platform for promoting the east African nation’s abundant tourist attractions, including Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, and national parks.

Opening the 4th SADC Industrialization Week and Exhibition, President Magufuli said SADC countries should do business among themselves to increase capital and promote industrial development within their regional bloc and the African continent at large.

The theme of the 4th Annual SADC Industrialization Week and Exhibition is “A Conducive Environment for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, Increased Intra-trade and Job Creation”.
